Dealing With Feeling

This is a must-read book for better understanding of yourself and other people. It is a clear version of Emotional Intelligence, and it is presented so well.

The first time I met with author, Dr. Marc Brackett, Founding Director for Yale School of Emotional Intelligence, was when he was a speaker at a NY State Association of Independent Schools event at my school—where I was head of school in 2012. If you are not familiar with him, here is a link to his website.

A few precious points on dealing with feeling that Dr. Brackett presents in this amazing book:

• "Acknowledging feelings—rather than dismissing them—is crucial to lowering emotional reactivity and improving your overall well-being." (page 117)

• "Research in the field of positive psychology has shown that how we perceive and interpret the events in our lives plays a key role in shaping our levels of happiness." (page 161)

• "My hope is that you now see emotion regulation not as a quick fix but as a lifelong practice that honors your inner world and helps shape the future you want to live." (page 263)
